. ODL Empowerment Evaluation. The Office of Diversity and Leadership conducted an Empowerment Evaluation on August 31, 2007 at the Arrillaga Alumni Center.
Dr. Hannah Valantine set the tone for the activity. She explained that the purpose of the exercise was to crystalize the mission of the office, take stock or assess key activities, and plan for the future. The group was engaged from start to finish. Dr. David Fetterman was invited to facilitate the workshop.
The group drafted a mission and vision for the Office, refining the existing mission of the office. They continued by assessing critical aspects of the office. Then they engaged in a dialogue about their assessments.
The results of the workshop and self-assessment will be summarized in a report, highlighting key issues of concerns as well as action steps required to address these concerns. In addition, bold new ideas were proposed and will be explored in the near future.

For additional information about the activity contact Dr. Claudia Morgan, Associate Director, Diversity and Leadership.

Initiation of the Office of Diversity & Leadership Evaluation

Office of Diversity & Leadership Evaluation.
The Office of Diversity and Leadership is committed to addressing the important global challenges of the 21st century. The School of Medicine activitly seeks to build cultural and ethnic diversity across its research, educational and patient care activities.

Under the direction of Senior Associate Dean Dr. Hannah Valantine, MD, the Office of Diversity and Leadership works to recruit and retain diverse faculty, students, trainees and staff to enhance the excellence of our academic and service programs.

Dr. Valantine has initiated an Office of Diversity & Leadership evaluation. This will provide the Office with a feedback mechanism that will be used to inform decision making and help the Office accomplish its objectives.

Dr. Valantine has appointed Dr. Fetterman, Director of Evaluation, in the School of Medicine's Division of Evaluation, to provide the Office with an evaluation design and assist with the implementation of the evaluation design. Dr. Fetterman has selected an empowerment evaluation approach, which is a participatory approach to assessment. (For more information about empowerment evaluation see Dr. Fetterman's latest book and web page.)

The evaluation process will be formally launched with a evaluation workshop on August 31, 2007. The workshop will focus on three steps: 1) mission of the office; 2) taking stock of activities or current operations; and 3) planning for the future (strategic plans and tools to monitor change over time). The agenda is available in advance.

The recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, as well as the identification and development of individual leadership potential, will be driving forces throughout the evaluation.

The workshop will be held in the Arrillaga Alumni Hall. It will begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 5:00 pm. For more details about the Evaluation Workshop, please contact Dr. Claudia Morgan, Associate Director of the Office of Diversity and Leadership .
